backflow pump priming

We are trying to get our system up and running and we are planning to use a garden hose to prime the pump. We are not sure if the wells are dry and want to see if the issue is with the pump or with the well. When connecting the hose to the pump should we use a back flow preventer to keep well water out of the potable water, and what type do I need?

What is the pump setup? Above-ground pumps?
