Problems with lawn sprinklers

There is an automatic lawn irrigation system at home that is installed to keep the lawn look fresh and green. But unlike other indoor systems, I do not maintain it properly. I think it is because of the lack of improper maintenance, there is a leak in the sprinkler. The sprinkler does not spray water uniformly and at times, there can be seen a leak in the system. The lawn is getting damaged because of this leak. Cannot find out the reason for the leak. I doubt whether the filters in the sprinkler are clogged that results in the leak and the nonuniform sprinkling. I have already contacted professional plumbers to get it repaired. Now on I have decided to properly maintain the water sprinklers. Can anyone of you give suggestions on how to maintain the lawn sprinklers? How often must the filter inside the sprinkler be cleaned?
