one zone low pressure until opening and closing the solenoid manually

I'm totally new to sprinkler troubleshooting, and I've already searched through the forums to see if others have experienced this problem, but I wasn't able to find anyone with the same symptoms...

I have very low pressure on 2 out of 5 zones. when I manually open the solenoid I can hear the water flowing through but it's definitely not enough water pressure - none of the nozzles in the zone pop out. I can hear the solenoid clicking when I turn on/off the zone so the controller does not appear to be defective.

However, when I close the solenoid's manual knob, for some reason it produces enough pressure to get all the spray nozzles working! Activating the solenoid by itself does not create enough pressure, but me fiddling with the manual knob somehow helps?? Can anyone tell me what's going on with my sprinkler?

thanks for your help in advance,

The diaphragms are old and need replacing.
