How to get water from a ditch 230' away

I have an irrigation ditch 230' away from my property. The ground between the ditch and my property is level. I want to use this water to sprinkle my lawn. I am in a residential area so I cannot flood irrigate.

The ditch/canal is an earthen canal that's about 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep. I was thinking of running a 1-2' pipe underground from the canal to a cistern on my property, and then pumping the water out of that cistern into an underground sprinkling system. My main concerns about this would be getting the right amount of water to flow up the pipe - enough to keep the cistern full when I am watering, not too much so that the cistern would burst (not sure this can even happen), and not too little where I don't have enough water to pump.

What do you think of this approach and do you have any better ideas?
