Wilkins 975XL 1 in. RPZ Backflow Preventer

I bought a new Wilkins 975XL 1 in. RPZ Backflow Preventer after the old one failed when my sprinkler system could not be winterize. Is this possible, if the backflow goes bad there is the possibility of not being able to get the system winterize? This what I was told by the sprinkler guy and the system was winterize from one on the sprinkler heads.
Additionally, I would like to make sure the new backflow preventer is installed correctly. Can the Wilkins 975XL 1 in. RPZ Backflow Preventer be installed on the outside , at least 12 inches above ground level using CPVC or should I transition from CPVC to copper on the outside using 1 inch copper pipes. Inside the house is a combination of copper and CPVC but the line coming from the main is CPVC.
Lastly, during the winterize of the system, should air be going through the Wilkins 975XL 1 in. RPZ Backflow Preventer during the blowout or should one of the test cock be used during blowout? See attached picture
