Need to drain supply line

Every year my backflow preventer freezes. I drain it each year, but it still freezes. This year the supply valve froze on the intake side.
Is there a way I can put a valve under ground on the supply side in order to drain the line each year and keep the water from building up behind the shutoff valve?

Yes
But First, There is a chance that you already have a shut off valve in the system.
If you know where your connection to the sprinkler water from the house water is, that is where to look.
Usually, a couple feet from the water meter or point of connection. It will be in a round valve box, usually grass will grow over the shut off valve. If you tap a shovel into the ground and listen for a thud or different sound than grass you may find it.

Or if you do not have one you can find the supply line to the Backflow preventer and install a ball valve.
