It wasn't telescopic, but looking at the Hit website those telescopic sprinklers do look interesting and they have a 7 inch pop up which retro-fits into a Rain Bird 4 inch pop up body. I see the current line of Hit 900 non-telescopic is also 9.5 inch body for a 6 inch pop up, and it interesting they have a 5 inch pop up with 8.5 inch body, that may be close enough for me. And that Hunter SRS-06 is 8.5 inch body. I'm looking around on eBay. I'll figure out something suitable.

I am figuring out swing joints. When I construct a swing joint, am I supposed to leave the street ells unglued to allow for future adjustment? Will it stay together?

Swing joints are all-threaded when done as an add-on. A pipe nipple is replaced by a 5-piece assembly. The end pieces are marlex street ells, then come MPT x barb elbows, and the center section is a short piece of swing pipe.
