(very) Basic Homeowner questions - New Install

Hello! Thought I'd ask some easy questions before I get to the complicated (for me) ones.
(1) Is it customary to leave some sort of map for the homeowner? Is it rude if I ask for one? I already mentioned it, and the contractor said "it's all up here." [tapping his noggin]
(2) if you are quoted for 6 zones and the install winds up being 4 zones, that leaves me confused. The quote is loosely based on zones, and I'm counting on the installer's expertise the quote the right set-up. Does that mean I overpaid?
Any input appreciated. After this I have a few more technical questions.
Respectfully submitted....
